Model train set accessories are the bits that make your model railroad come alive with the amazing details.
Bridges, tunnels, signs, signals, people, cars and so much more are part of the thousands of model railway accessories available.
Model railroads can be built in a variety of scales and eras. Modern model railroads and the old steam trains require a variety of completely different model railroad set accessories.
The main scales are G, O, S, HO, N and Z scale (going from the largest to the smallest scale). A huge amount of accessories are available for each one of theses scales. Over the years HO scale has become the more popular scale so the manufacturers have catered for the supply and demand by creating a wide range of electric train set accessories.
The accessories for each scale are built to a different set of specifications. For example, a G scale model railroad is mostly built outside so the accessories need to be more robust and able to handle the sun, rain, snow and whatever else mother nature tends to throw at it. Because of their size and build quality they will be more expensive. However, because G scale is bigger it is also easier to build your own model railway accessories.
N scale model railway accessories are usually cheaper because the build quality does not have to be as good or as detailed as G scale. The disadvantage is that because the scale is fairly small it is much harder to build your own accessories. The larger structures like the buildings can be kitbashed or scratch built.
Kitbashing is when you buy a model train building kit (for example) from your local hobby shop and modify it to make it suit your needs. Scratchbuilding is when you build a structure from nothing. Both are great cost effective ways of adding model train set accessories.
