There is a huge amount of model train planning information on the internet, but you need to be careful.
There is so much contradictory model train information, that this can often be quite confusing and frustrating for the beginner. Luckily, you have come to the right place, because I’ll give you a quick overview of what information you should look for…
The first place to start when it comes to model train planning information is your available space. This will determine what scale your model railroad should be.
For larger, outdoor model railways G scale is the preferred option.
Manufacturers of G scale trains produce a wide range of well crafted, durable engines and cars, as well as tracks and accessories.
The reason why these are made so durable, is that they have to survive all kinds of weather conditions, including rain and snow. This scale is large enough to be seen by your guests sitting on the back porch, yet still small enough to fit a reasonable sized model railroad into your back garden.
If you have just enough space on a desk or small table, Z scale is an ideal size. However, this scale is not suitable for children. With all the small parts and accessories, they are a choking hazard.
For people suffering with arthritis or problems with vision, HO scale is an ideal size. While these trains take up more space than the smaller scales, they are easier to handle. HO and OO scales are highly detailed, durable and if treated properly will last a very long time. HO and OO scales are ideal for the basement or garage layout, and there are many model railroad designs available for them.
