Model Train Help – 3 Tips To Save A Huge Amount Of Money Buying Second Hand Model Train Accessories

The common complaint I hear from model railroaders is “model railroading is too expensive“. And I always reply “If it’s too expensive you are shopping in the wrong place“.

As I’ve always said over the years, model railroading is as expensive as you want it to be.

You need to remind yourself that model railroading is an adventure and has many benefits which can’t be bought.

Sometimes the fun can be in buying that steam locomotive fully equipped for DCC at half the price of the price in the hobby shop.

I have heard some great stories of how model railroaders spent days researching the locomotive they wanted to buy. Then they spent days finding places they could buy it from and came across a sensational deal because some hobby shop on the other side of the country was clearing stock and offered a huge discount with free postage.

Sometimes the chase is the most exciting bit. And that’s what it’s all about. The excitement, the fun and the enjoyment are all priceless.

But, the best stories have come from buying second hand on eBay.

Almost daily some amazing deals are found on eBay. Complete model train layouts, fully equipped DCC locomotives, DCC controls, power packs and more can be found on eBay at a fraction of the cost that it would cost new. Most of these items are “as new” and are being sold because the owner has passed on or just don’t want it collecting more dust.

In our model train newsletter we show model railroaders the tips to buying on eBay and avoiding those duds that sometimes raise their head. I’ll share some of those tips with you here:

1) Do your research – know what you are buying. What is the new price?

2) Check the buyers feedback – eBay have a great feedback system which quickly tells you whether you should be buying from the seller or not. I always tend to buy from sellers with more than 100 feedback and 100%.

3) Ask the seller questions – this is to determine whether the seller is responsive or not. A responsive seller will want to keep their great feedback rating and is more likely to be honest. Even if their description answers every question you may have, ask something just to see their response.

Model railroading is not expensive when you know where to buy. You will be amazed at what you ca find if you just take the time.
