How To Wire For DCC (Digital Command Control)

I have recently been bit by the DCC bug. Now a friend of mine owns a hobby shop and one of his friends told me that every piece of track had to be wired seperately. Now the old way was to have one feeder per block. I am wondering if what this fellow told me was overkill to keep down the number of shorts in the layout…
