Is factory foam roadbed a good option? New to hobby.

I am not sure what you mean.

Many folks in the club I belong to use a formed gray foam roadbed. Its really good for deadening the sound, but its no good for holding track spikes. So if you use a foam roadbed, you will have to glue down your track with a latex adhesive caulk, or some other kind of foam friendly glue.
